Ushr Guide

Ushr means "one-tenth"; it is an Islamic legal term referring to a type of tithe (tax) levied on agricultural produce or certain other earnings.
It derives from the Assyrian tax "ishru-u" or Hebrew "ma'aser" (one-tenth). Islam determined the amount of zakat to be collected from certain agricultural produce and called it "ushr".
Based on the Quran, Sunnah, and Ijma'. Quran (6/141): "Eat of [each of] its fruit when it yields and give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvest."
The Prophet ﷺ said: "On crops watered by rivers or rain: one-tenth (ushr); on crops irrigated by animals: one-twentieth (half-ushr)." (Muslim).
The person liable to ushr must be Muslim. The produce of minors and the mentally ill is also subject to ushr if the land is ushr land.
Abu Hanifa: On every type of crop produced from the land (grain, vegetables, fruit). Imam Shafi'i: On crops that can be stored and serve as food.
Abu Hanifa: No nisab threshold. Imameyn: Exempt up to five wasqs (approx. 653 kg). Diyanet adopts the 653 kg lower threshold.
Recent fatwas consider it permissible to pay zakat on the amount remaining after deducting agricultural input costs (fertiliser, fuel, etc.).
